When it comes to great family fun in the fall, the glorious Utah mountain locations of Heber City and Midway provide endless options.

Whether you want to go hiking, golfing, on a scenic excursion and much more, the area has it all, including one of the state’s most historic accommodations – Homestead Resort. A selection of the best fall activities in Heber Valley includes:

All Things Pumpkin

As we dip into October, kids look forward to all things Halloween. Heber Valley stokes this enthusiasm with its Pumpkin Train (on select dates from Oct. 3 to 30). The 40-minute ride provides entertainment in the form of costumed characters and a pumpkin cookie.

At the depot, you can also take a chilling but family-friendly tour of the haunted car. And what pumpkin tour would be complete without allowing you to pick your own pumpkin from the patch? Carve it after for Halloween!

Other Family Fun Activities

Open seven days a week, Homestead Resort offers its annual Scarecrow Walk, with dozens of scarecrows set up by local businesses.  Come walk the grounds and cast your ballot for your favorite one.

You can also have the thrill of seeing the Headless Horseman, as you go on an authentic haunted horse-drawn wagon ride through the woods of Soldier Hollow in Midway. You’ll hear a blood-pounding narration of Washington Irving’s original short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” sparking the appearance of the apparition.

Whack a Few Balls

If knocking white balls around a course sounds like a great autumn thrill (weather permitting), you can take your choice of five great golf courses in the area, with spectacular mountain views as the backdrop.

Take a Road Trip

One of the best ways to enjoy the scenic glories of Heber Valley and the area is to take a road trip. A three-hour, 100-mile expedition will take you along the Adventure Highway, through Wasatch and Uinta National Forests. Some of the highlights of the trip include spectacular views of forests and grasslands, snowy mountain peaks, fall colors, and breathtaking panoramas. Of course, there are lots of chances to stop, stretch the legs and take in the scenery at a slower pace.

Another good bet is the 56-mile trip up the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway The views from Bald Mountain Pass are breathtaking, across an endless sea of trees and ridgelines. Wildlife spotted roadside is a frequent bonus. Different trailheads offer opportunities for short hikes in the woods.

To enjoy a true Utah experience, and all the fall activities in Heber Valley, book a stay at Homestead Resort. With history going back to the 19th century, this alpine resort provides a unique classic American experience, with its charming accommodations, traditional architecture, incredible atmosphere and boundless recreational activities.
